What makes us unique...
Big Oak is a small, not-for-profit, progressive childcare center on Madisons east side. Big Oak strives to provide a home-like atmosphere in a building that was converted from a private family home. The toddler programs are on the first floor and the preschool is upstairs.
Though each program has separate agendas, occasionally activities are provided that all Big Oak children can participate in together. A child can enter Big Oak as a toddler and move into the preschool until theyre ready for kindergarten.
The staff recognizes the need for consistency. The routines and schedules they provide incorporate activities that foster childrens interests and emerging skills while allowing children freedom of movement to provide a positive, empowering experience.
We are a state licensed and city accredited program serving children one to five years old.
Child centered programs...
Big Oak uses a variety of experiences to provide our high quality care. Children actively participate in small and large groups that encompass art, music, dramatic play, fine and large motor experiences. These activities provide children with ample opportunity to strengthen their social skills and develop their emerging cognitive skills at a pace that compliments their interests and abilities. Activities at Big Oak foster independence and a positive self-image.
Family involvement is very important to Big Oak. We have many opportunities for families to participate in our programs. Parents can serve on our board, volunteer time to committees, chaperone field trips, and help out on workdays. Big Oak provides opportunities for parents and families to socialize and get to know one another at open houses and family potlucks. Open communication is important to our programs. We encourage this through daily discussions between parents and staff and by scheduling parent-teacher conferences twice a year.
Included in the monthly tuition fee is a full breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack. Emphasis is on fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. We serve no red meat or pork. Meals meet the nutritional requirements established by the USDA and are prepared on-site. Children often get involved in meal preparation with cooking opportunities incorporated into the curriculum.
