"Metastasized"..."traveled"..."spread to the base of the brain." Those were some of the shocking words that the Brusewitz family was hearing after what they thought was to be a common, conventional ear surgery performed on their youngest child, Garrett. A sort of numbness ran through their minds as they reeled from the mere shock and surprise of such suggestive language.
It was April of 2010 that 19-year old Garrett Brusewitz began to express to his family that he was experiencing difficulty hearing. Initially, this appeared to be nothing more than one more item to put on the family's "to-do" list-schedule a hearing test for Garrett, perhaps early summer, after he finished his first year of college, his mom finished her school year as a K-5 teacher, and all the details for his sister's destination wedding were complete.
Hence, Garrett's journey began. In mid-July, Garrett visited the audiologist and was relieved to discover that his hearing difficulty was thought to be the result of a benign tumor, usually prevalent in young people and responsible for hearing loss. However, to ensure that the doctors were well advised as to the location and condition of the tumor, an MRI was planned for late July. Although a negative diagnosis had never been issued, immediately after the MRI, doctors called to schedule surgery, with a notable sense of urgency. After 3 excruciating weeks following the surgery, and the transformation of Garrett's fit young body into one beleaguered with the inability to walk and swallow, the grim diagnosis of Stage IV and aggressive cancer was given.
In spite of the above stated difficulties and undergoing aggressive radiation and chemo treatments weekly, Garrett has kept a godly, positive attitude. To date, Garrett has never questioned or complained about his circumstances but rather looks at every day as one that is better than the last; he has clung to his faith in the Lord, believing that there is nothing he can do about his current situation except give it his best efforts! In fact, at his last appointment, Garrett's doctor stated that he wished he could clone Garrett's tremendous attitude. Furthermore, Garrett, in spite of new and dramatic cognitive difficulties, tried to persuade his parents to allow him to take 18 online credits! Cautiously, they compromised on 10 credits, concerned at the over-taxing effects school may have upon Garrett.
Garrett has been described as an easy going and loving young man, academically gifted and a great role model for children. A 2009 graduate and alumnus of Grace Christian Academy, Garrett was well liked by both his teachers and peers. He was a member of the National Honor Society and exhibited leadership in many areas; Garrett has been known to give back to his school and church at any given opportunity. Now, we are seeking those who can partner and support Garrett and the Brusewitz family both financially and physically, as they face this difficult battle before them.
If you feel led to help the Brusewitz family financially or physically, please contact the school office.
Laura, class of 1998
My education at Grace Christian Academy was a solid foundation that I continue to build on. I graduated fully prepared for the academic challenges I faced while achieving my undergraduate degree from Cedarville University. I was able to CLEP out of numerous college classes which saved time and money. Many of my entry level classes were almost a review because I had already studied much of the material at Grace. My writing skills and abilities were learned and devoloped at GCA and I continue to apply them today in my professional career and the Masters degree program I am enrolled in currently.
I really enjoyed attending a small Christian school. Close and consistent interaction with the teachers was so important, and fellow classmates became good friends. I know my time at Grace Christian Academy was instrumental in where I am academically and professionally today. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to have received a Christian education.
