This new Liturgical Year brings us into the Year A Cycle of readings, in which we will hear the Gospel of Matthew.
Advent has a twofold character: as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ's first coming to us is remembered; also as a season when that remembrance directs the heart and mind to await Christ's second coming - the end time.
In the first reading, Isaiah invites Israel to salvation as a Nation. He emphasizes God's activity that leads to peace and salvation. Paul invites the Christian Romans to salvation by practicing morality. Our choices are in response to God's prior action on our behalf. In the Gospel Jesus invites all of us to salvation by staying awake and being prepared for His coming. Christ's coming compels a choice to walk in darkness or light, to be asleep or awake, to be prepared for when "the Son of Man will come."
"Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know whichday your Lord will come."
Plan on participating in the 4:00 Christmas Eve Liturgy by clicking on this link, downloading, and sending it back to the Child & Youth Ministry Office by Dec. 10th.
