Another Rather Serious Flaw in Internet Explorer

Microsoft has been notified of a vulnerability in Internet Explorer that could potentially allow a successful attacker to attain remote control of a pc.
Microsoft released a TechNet article on July 6th notifying IT Professionals of this vulnerability affecting only Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. According to Microsoft, the flaw does NOT affect Windows Vista and Server 2008. The article can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/972890.mspx
According to the article:
"Microsoft is investigating a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Video ActiveX Control. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. When using Internet Explorer, code execution is remote and may not require any user intervention.
We are aware of attacks attempting to exploit the vulnerability. "

Ok, stole that from a t-shirt I'm getting from the company we are partnered with for providing online backup, but it states it pretty clearly, I think.
All too often, sometimes multiple times a week, a customer walks in the door at TCG with a "crashed" computer. The first thing we ask them to do is to define "crash", because you'd be surprised what that means to different people (but that's another article). But back to the initial comment, all to often, customers come in with a "crashed" computer... and that "crash" is actually a failed or failing hard drive.

Well, the new site is live, although just a bit sooner than I would have liked it. There are a number of things that need to be fixed yet, and I'll be doing those things over the next week I hope.
We had to take the new site live quickly yesterday because I upgraded our forum to IPB's new version 3.0 (boy is that new and different). Our old main page was driven partially by the forum, and since the new 3.0 forum is not compatible with the portal we were using, once we made that forum upgrade, we realized that we broke the main page. We knew it was going to happen, I just happened to forget it at the time I was upgrading the forum.
So, anyway, we've got some images that are broken currently. Those will be fixed soon, however they most likely won't be fixed before next week, as we are taking a long weekend over the 4th holiday. There are some other things we need to make prettier and better as well... we're working on it. :)
Lots to do yet, but we're getting there... exciting improvements... just WAIT till you get a look at the new forum, wow...
Thanks for bearing with us through these changes!

Well, I've been running a file server on Debian for a while now.... but I decided to give Ubuntu Server a try... mostly because I tried to add a hard drive to add space to my Debian Linux box, but it was giving me a bunch of hassle. So... I had a spare older computer sitting here with a 1.3 Ghz Athlon processor, only 128 MB RAM and I put a 160 GB hard drive in it to act as my new file server. The idea is to possibly make this machine a PBX phone system using Asterisk sometime in the future, but that's for another article I guess.

Ubuntu Server installed without a hitch, however, when I booted it up... I thought something was missing. It just stopped at a command line. Oh boy. I didn't realize the server version didn't automatically load a GUI (Graphical User Interface). That wasn't what I really thought was going to happen, but it did... so off to search for how to load the GUI.

I found that the server version needs to have the GUI installed if you wish to use it, and the command was simply:

Press enter. It then prompts you for a superuser (su) or root password. Type in the password you set up and away it goes..... a few minutes later I had the Ubuntu Gnome desktop running on my Ubuntu Server.

Next I set up Samba to allow for file sharing. This allows the Windows machines on the network to see the file shares. That was a bit of a hurdle in itself, but it's up and working... and beyond what I wanted to discuss in this article.

Next, I wanted to get TightVNC on the server. The TightVNC Server allows remote access to the server. Since my plan is to have this machine setting in another room with nothing plugged into it but the power cord and a network cable, I needed some way to administer it remotely.... Enter TightVNC.

I had some trouble getting this going.... but here's what finally worked.
