For the first time in about two years, we are putting out a call for new hires. Our insurance company insists that applicants be 25 or older and have a very good driving record. If you or someone you know qualifies and has great customer service skills, an interest in workplace democracy, and a working knowledge of Madison streets (and the ability to read a map), then you should consider joining up with Union Cab of Madison co-operative.

Drivers may not solicit you at the Dane Co. Airport. Passengers may choose any taxi company or driver that they wish. Passengers do not have to take the first cab in line. It is your choice to take a Union Cab even if we are the second or tenth cab in line. We hope that you choose us, but the choice is yours no matter what the driver waiting at the door tells you.

43 Union Cab drivers safely drove enough miles to circumnavigate the globe in 2009--A new record! Twice a year, Union Cab rewards drivers for perfect driving (no crashes, no tickets). In 2009, 125 drivers completed the year safely and 43 did so while driving more than 24,888 miles (the circumference of the Earth). While some companies make a safety "a goal", Union Cab considers safety a key part of our mission and a core value. We consider the safety and health of our members and the general public of paramount importance. Just part of the co-operative difference and the value of having the owners behind the wheel!

The United Nations has declared 2012, the International Year of the Co-operative recognizing the vital role that co-operatives play in the global economy. The UN urges member nations:

The City of Madison has declared a "Peak Period" at the Dane County Regional Airport. This means that all taxicabs may offer share-ride service provided the passengers agree to share a cab. See Union Cab's competitive share ride rates. Passengers travelling together (speaking with one voice) count as one party. Passengers may always choose to have their own direct-service Union Cab. This Peak Period is in effect through Monday November 30, 2009. A peak period is always in effect every night from 9:00 p.m. until the airport closes.

The party this Saturday promises to be one of incredible lost memories. We wanted to add some helpful tips to make Freakfest a success:
Union Cab will have every available taxicab on the road. We expect that our competitors will follow suit. Even so, there will still not be enough cabs at bartime.
Bartime is an extra hour plan accordingly. Our busiest times will be between midnight CDT and 2:30 am CST.
Expect delays in service. Especially as it gets closer to the second bar time. We will be doing our best to pick everyone up, but you should expect 30-60 minutes when ordering. Of course, you might also get lucky, so you should also be ready to go when you call. We know.
We don't allow open intoxicants in the cab--it is against the law. We also don't allow smoking in the vehicles--it is also against the law.
If you feel nauseous, let your driver know so that he or she can stop the cab and you can exit the vehicle.
Driver specifically carry as little change as possible.

Vice -President Butch Hanson, in his six year of service as a director, was elected to succeed Corbin. Replacing Hanson as V.P. was veteran member Brian Hill who had just been elected to his third three-year term. Brian Warnecke and Jim Wold were re-elected as Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

The membership of Union Cab chose three members to its Board of Directors at its Annual General Meeting of the membership held on September 13, 2009. The membership elected Brian Hill, Jason Newbury and Tim Murray. All three have previously served on the cooperative's board. Hill also serves at the Information Services Manager, Newbury is the Taxi Office Supervisor, and Tim Murray is a full time graveyard shift dispatcher. The three have a combined 39 years of experience with the cooperative. The election was competitive with eleven candidates seeking three seats. The membership will now elect three alternate directors who will stand ready to serve in case of absences.

Last year, the folks at Adams Outdoor Advertising made us an offer we couldn't refuse. Many Madisonians saw the giant Union Cab on the side of Madison Metro Bus #897 over the last several months. That ad won the Silver Award for "Out of Home Mass Transit, Exterior". It is considered the incorporation of the host vehicle into the ad (the front wheel of bus was the front wheel of the taxi). Congratulations to the artistic team of Jessica Laycock, Tina Rataj, Evan Schultz, Jeff Schjleis, and Sharon Vanomy!
