Electronic Federal Tax Payments Phishing Scheme
October, 2010: The IRS has issued a warning about a phishing attack targeting Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) users. The scheme uses an e-mail claiming that the user's tax payment failed with with an R21 return reason code and directs the user to a website for additional information. The link contains malware that is commonly used by fraudsters to steal online banking credentials, credit card details, and other sensitive information.
The IRS does not initiate taxpayer communications through e-mail. If you receive a message claiming to be from the IRS or EFTPS, DO NOT reply, click the link or submit any information, and forward the e-mail to phishing@IRS.gov or call the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.
