Callbacks for our TML show

Alex and Janel: Their collaboration is about taking what we collectively love and finding our voice - making it our own. My hope is that it's the kind of music that won't alienate loyal fans of any one style of music, but can actually wind up bringing a wide range of music lovers together. And, maybe most importantly, I think the way we're doing it is pretty unique: with Alex's high tenor and my low alto, we meet somewhere in the middle, and we often leave people guessing who's singing which part...it's the boy-girl harmony thing, but with a twist. Chemistry Candidate, Corey Cunningham, Corporate Research & Engineering, Kimberly-Clark Corp., "Photochemistry of Steric-locked Copper Phenanthrolines and a Proposal for New Boron Difluoride Ligands"
4:30pm Location: Thomas Steitz Hall of Science 202 - Lecture Hall
Copper phenanthrolines have been a topic of research since the 1980's when McMillin and co-workers first teased emission from bis(2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)copper(I), the most basic of modified phenanthrolines. From then until now, researchers have been adding various amounts of steric hindrance to lengthen the excited state lifetime. Highlighted in the first part of this presentation will be an alternative steric modification to the phenanthroline core that lead to an almost 4-fold increase in the lifetime. This modification acted as a simple steric lock to maintain a more rigid excited state geometry rather than exotic steric bulk. The second part of the seminar will present a research proposal for a new aspect of boron difluoride photochemistry. The proposal utilizes hydroxybenzophenone as an alternative parent ligand system to the more established dipyrromethene and diketone motifs. The new system offers the necessary delocalization for intense fluorescence along with several improvements over the traditional ligands. Particular emphasis will be placed on the many ways undergraduates will be able to contribute to the project.

Chemistry Candidate, Jay Stork, Lawrence University, "Beyond Bodipy (II) – Sylwia’s Children: Recent Advances in Platinum Dipyrrinato Compounds.”
5:00pm Location: Thomas Steitz Hall of Science 202 - Lecture Hall
Abstract: “Dipyrrinato compounds are extremely useful, as demonstrated by the wide applicability of the biological dyes based on “Bodipy.” However, dipyrrin compounds have also found applications in solid state materials and organic synthesis. While exploring the synthesis of platinum dipyrrinato complexes for potential photocatalytic hydrogen production we have synthesized several platinum dipyrrinato complexes. The new compounds have unexpected reactivities, which lead to unusual structures. This presentation will focus on the new dipyrrin chemistry.”
