What's New at Rock Energy Cooperative
Thanks for Attending Member Appreciation Day
People of all ages enjoyed the antics of Chris Cakes pancake chefs during Member Appreciation Day on Sept. 18 at the Janesville headquarters. The chefs used their fancy pancake flipping techniques to make the breakfast more entertaining. When people wanted another pancake, they just had to hold up their plate and catch one. In addition to breakfast, the crowd had their blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol tested at a Mercy Health System health fair; watched the Oregon Jugglers Group; and got a birds-eye view of the area from a bucket truck. Thanks for joining us, and we hope to see you again next year.
U.S. Capitol, Co-op Principles Highlight Rockton Teen's Trip
Rachel MacDowell of Rockton, Ill., represented Rock Energy Cooperative in June on the 2010 Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. Rachel, the daughter of Martin and Susan MacDowell of Rockton, toured Washington with about 1,500 young leaders from across the nation. She returned from the trip with a greater appreciation of the political process and a better understanding of cooperative business principles.
Loans Available for Ground Source Heat Pumps
Did you know that one of the most promising solutions to high energy costs could be buried right in your backyard?
It's true. Ground source heat pumps, also referred to as geothermal technology, can significantly reduce energy costs while meeting a home's entire heating and cooling needs. It can even be used for water heating.
Recognizing that it might be difficult for members to fund such a project, Rock Energy Cooperative's board of directors has approved a loan program that allows members to borrow up to $7,000 for five years at a low interest rate.
Rock Energy Successful in Getting Lawsuit Dismissed
A lawsuit filed by the village of Rockton against Rock Energy Cooperative has been dismissed.
On April 30, Circuit Judge Edward Prochaska dismissed the lawsuit, saying that the village did not have an enforceable contract requiring Rock Energy to sell utility assets to the village because there had been no agreement on the price that the village would pay for those assets.
“We appreciate the judge’s decision and are hopeful that this matter can be put behind us,” said Shane Larson, CEO of Rock Energy. “We want to continue providing safe, reliable and affordable electric and natural gas service to residents of the village of Rockton, as we have successfully done since 2007.”
Rock Energy Distributes $550,000 in Capital Credits
Rock Energy Cooperative is distributing more than $550,000 to its members in capital credits this year. Since the co-op was incorporated 74 years ago, more than $9 million has been returned to members. Capital credits represent members' economic participation in Rock Energy and distinguishes the cooperative form of business from others.
Please Consider Donation to Project Lift Up
Please consider making a donation to Project Lift Up, a voluntary member donation program designed to help people who are struggling financially pay their energy bills. Just as the program's name implies, your contribution will help lift up your neighbor financially.
More than 377,000 co-op members from across the nation have joined the Our Energy, Our Future grassroots campaign, demanding that elected officials keep consumer interests in mind. Their voices had a major impact this summer, as the U.S. House passed a climate change bill that included more than $3 billion in rate relief for co-op consumers from initial proposals. The climate change debate, now moves to the U.S. Senate.
