Hello. Welcome to the Sacred Feather web site. Sacred Feather is a retail store specializing in hats and leather goods. Our hats run the gamut from baseball caps to collapsible silk top hats, with a broad range of styles in between. We feature some of our best sellers at this web site. We also sell both manufactured and hand-made leather goods (our mix is about 80% hats and 20% leather goods). Click on "Leather Goods" on this page for a sampling of the leather items we offer. The manufactured goods we offer are primarily domestically made and although we do not make everything we sell, we know what to look for (and what our customers look for). We take pride in what we sell and make. At 417 State Street, Sacred Feather is right in middle of the action. State Street is in the heart of downtown Madison, with the sprawling University of Wisconsin (40,000 students) at one end of the street and the State Capitol at the other end. The street is located on an isthmus between two beautiful lakes and offers an eclectic mix of funky shops, restaurants and outdoor cafes with dining and entertainment providing an unending shopping experience for visitors and locals alike. Here is a map of our geography for those unfamiliar with the area.
Established in 1975, Sacred Feather began as a partnership between Paul Henry, a CPA from North Carolina who was looking for his Utopia and a business to realize it with, and Tony Badame, a loan officer from Chicago who was “losing interest” with banking. Paul and Tony began as push cart peddlers with a vending cart on State Street. They found a basement location after a month or so and opened for business as a craft shop offering hand made leather goods, jewelry, pottery, artwork, and a few hats. After five years in business together, Paul left the partnership and settled in Portland Oregon. Sacred Feather, now owned by Tony and his wife Annie, is housed in a rustic sandstone building, built in 1884. The shop is set back a bit from the street and was once a tailor shop and then a lingerie shop for 30 years. Now a hat and leather shop, the building has the look of an old boarding house (rooms are still rented upstairs) and on cold winter days you'll find a fire blazing in the small (formerly coal-burning) fireplace. At Sacred Feather we don’t just sell hats, we stand behind them. We want our customers to look to us for the fit, style, and care of the hats we sell. We specialize in hard-to-fit sizes and offer brand name products for men and women. We also showcase a number of handmade women's hats at our shop, most made by local artists. Browse the hats offered at this site and mail or fax us an order or stop in when you're in town. We are open seven days a week:
Monday thru Saturday 10-6
