"It'll be a test of endurance for the staff, that's for sure," says We Are Beatrice guitarist Mike Bacsi. The endurance test he mentions is a nine-hour, five-band stretch of music Bacsi's band leads off at the Frequency on Saturday, Nov. 20. Seven dollars at the door means 78 cents per hour. >More

UW chancellor says the university is in jeopardy unless the state allows a new approach

One can't avoid the irony in Biddy Martin's words as she speaks of her youth in rural Virginia some 50 years ago. She's recalling the post-Jim Crow era of the South, a time when the shackles of segregation and separate-but-equal were loosening yet racism remained rampant. In her words, "virulent racism." >MoreUW Institutes for Discovery will serve campus and community
'An engine for creativity'
Alicia Yager on Thursday 11/11/2010
Visitors entering the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery at the UW-Madison at its Dec. 2 grand opening will encounter a striking blend of the past and the future. The past is represented by the Mesozoic-themed garden, the fossils embedded in the floor tiles and the scientific trivia walls located in the Town Center on the first floor. As for the future, visitors simply need to look up at the top three floors through glass walls at researchers working on health care breakthroughs. >More

Blowin' Smoke Barbecue features Kansas City-style barbecue, says owner-chef Robert Bishop. That means slow-smoked and dry-rubbed, with a ketchup-based, sweet sauce "with maybe a little kick" but not a super amount of heat. Bishop serves the sauce on the side, the meat in hamburger-style buns. Available are beef brisket, pork, ham, chicken, turkey and pastrami. The pastrami has been the biggest hit, somewhat to Bishop's surprise. >MoreBeer Here: Back Forty Bock from New Glarus Brewing

New Glarus Brewing just released its latest beer, Back Forty Bock. It's a brew for those who enjoy seasonal bocks, with their malty tones of caramel and chocolate and their deep amber and bronze color. For local enthusiasts in the over-50 crowd, this beer will bring back memories of the winter releases of bock beers from breweries like Stevens Point, Potosi, Leinenkugel's, and Huber. Brewmaster Dan Carey's latest creation is in the spirit of those iconic Wisconsin bock beers. >More

A longtime leader in carefully compiled sets has been Bear Family in Germany, one of the pioneers of multi-disc sets dedicated to single artists or labels in rock and country music. The label's 35th anniversary year included one of their most elaborate productions ever, the 13-CD set Next Stop is Vietnam: The War on Record, 1961-2008. The collection will be the starting point of a symposium about music during the war, running November 18-20 at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and Monona Terrace. >MoreOpen-mike performers risk utter humiliation

There's something about open mikes that strikes fear in the bravest of hearts. For many performers, it's petrifying to bare their souls for crowds of dispassionate half-drunks more invested in the bottoms of their PBRs than in the earnest folk singer onstage. I am awkwardness-averse, and observing such scenes gives me no secret thrill. >More

Wilmington on DVD: The Kids Are All Right, Chaplin, Clash of the Titans, Lottery Ticket
Mike Wilmington on Wednesday 11/17/2010 10:00 am
The Kids Are All Right is the kind of top-quality medium-budget movie they should definitely make more often in Hollywood: a smart, realistic, humane script with lots of savvy contemporary observations, and good parts for excellent actors. The actors, a first-rate ensemble -- especially Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo -- have a ball, and director/co-writer Lisa Cholodenko fills scene after scene with Cassavetsian realism/spontaneity and Hal Ashby-style L.A. humor and sparkle. >More
